Creating a Cozy Living Room

We’re working on the house of a lovely couple at the moment that is expecting their first baby. The front door opens into a large and open living room with a beautiful stone fireplace and lots of sunny windows. Our client wanted a space that was elegant, fresh and modern with lots of pops of color. The fabric that really inspired the color palette of the living room was this peachy orange (below) by Quadrille. We pulled the pale green and strong blueberry blue out for some of the upholstered pieces in the room and brought in a few different neutrals that either had great texture or pattern to keep things interesting and graphic. The textile in the upper left corner below is the wallpaper for the dining room which opens into the living room.To give you an idea of the space and how we placed the furniture, here’s a quick sketch of the floor plan. Since the front door literally opens right up into the living room, we wanted to create a furniture map that felt open and that meant not placing the sofa in front the fireplace. We usually like to keep the biggest piece of upholstered furniture in a living room neutral. What will make this sofa fun is the pillow fabrics. A few weeks ago we showed you some of the options we were considering for the rug in this room. We took our client to ABC Carpet to see some of the blue Madeleine Weinrib rugs we had pulled but none of them were speaking to her. We kept looking and found a really chic orange stripe that gave all of the fabrics more vibrancy. Sometimes all it takes is an open mind to realize what your room is missing! This is the style of chair we’re considering. They’ll be reupholstered in this soft green.
A little lacquer goes a long way! This table keeps things modern and young feeling. We love the legs!We were looking for a pair of small occasional chairs to go in front of the fireplace but had been unsuccessful. Our client found these Chinese Chippendale chairs on Ebay! They’ll get a fresh coat of paint and some new seat cushions. These chairs are perfect for in front of the fireplace because you can see through their backs. We didn’t want anything solid that would prevent people’s view of the gorgeous fireplace. We haven’t found the perfect bench just yet–we’re hoping to find something at Brimfield tomorrow! But we know we’ll be recovering it in this blue velvet.

We found this vintage grass cloth covered console at one of our usual CT antique haunts. Up against the wall with a mirror or some great art hanging above and a lamp at one side, this tabletop will make a cool spot for a mini bar.

What’s going above the fireplace is yet to be decided, but we’d love to do something colorful and graphic.
Here’s a more detailed version of the floor plan. Can you imagine it in your head? We can’t wait to install this living room.

Another lovely scheme. What is the fabric that will be the seat cushion on the Chippendale chairs? Thanks!

  • Lauren

Hi Shana! That fabric is Alan Campbell.

  • Susan

Where did you find that coffee table?!? It is my dream table… I know you said that it’s been painted, but, was it just another lucky find? Or can I actually purchase it from somewhere?

  • Lauren

Hi Susan, that coffee table is from Hickory Pearson. It’s sort of the perfect coffee table, right?

  • Kathy

I LOVE this living room and i can totally picture it! I would die for the grasscloth console. What is the name of the wallpaper?

  • Lauren

    Hi Kathy,
Thanks so much for your enthusiasm! The wallpaper is by Quadrille and it is called San Marco, color is greige on almost white

  • Stacey

I love it! It honestly feels like some sort of interior designer magic the way you both pull together pattern and color so perfectly. It’s giving me lots of inspiration. These are my favorite kind of posts by the way. I love the way you break down your design process a little so us non-designers can learn and be inspired!

  • Donna

Hi who makes the comfy chairs?

  • Bonnie

Love the two fabrics for pillows. The peachy patterned fabric is from Quadrille it seems, and the tan striped? Thanks!

  • Lauren
