Slipper Chairs

We’re on the hunt for a great slipper chair and we don’t want to spend the money to have one custom-made by our upholsterer. The slipper chair is something that we are super picky about in terms of style. We like slipper chairs inspired by Billy Baldwin’s design and not a lot of others. Why? Baldwin really did figure out the perfect dimensions of the upholstered slipper chair. At 18″W x 27″D x 29″OAH, Baldwin’s slipper is not too small and has just the right seat height and pitch. We also love the boxy shape and low back of Baldwin’s slipper chair; it feels modern and a little feminine at the same time. Here’s Baldwin’s small and large slipper chairs (below), both of which are being made by Ventry Ltd. Don’t you love the cut out in the back for the seat cushion? These chairs look wonderful when two different fabrics are used (one for the seat cushion and the other for the body).bbThese are a few of our favorite high/low slipper chairs available online right now. #3 is the closest to the original Billy Baldwin style (in fact, its dimensions differ by just an inch in depth). #4 is a great deal price wise, mimicking the boxy nature of the Baldwin style with updated exposed legs. slipperchairs11. Simply Baker (Call for pricing) 2. Oomph ($1,565) 3. Oomph ($1,210) 4. Wayfair ($161.03). The Oomph prices look steep, but they’re actually not terrible considering each chair is custom-made to order with whatever fabric you like, here in the USA (the quality is top notch). Below are a few snaps from Bill Baldwin’s book, “Billy Baldwin Decorates,” (one of our top interior design reference books!). If you look closely at Baldwin’s rooms, he used a slipper chair in almost every one. bb1His slipper chair works among many different furniture styles–part of why it’s such a flexible piece! bb2 Do you have a great resource for slipper chairs? Do tell!

Upholstered as they are, 2 and 3 both look like tiny beds! 🙂
