Painted Floors

Don’t get me wrong, hardwood floors hold a special place in my heart, but sometimes they can seem a little monotonous…While we most often rely on rugs and carpeting to add warmth, color, and texture to a space, sometimes textiles aren’t always the answer. Introducing painted floors (no matter how complex or simple the design) is a great way to add interest to your home. Let’s take a look at some of our favorite painted floor images, below. 1a104b1ac20bd0e8af4d6940523e2f34In a Hamptons home, above, designer Alex Papachristidis transforms this floor into a marquetry masterpiece. Using different values of wood stain, a pattern resembling beautiful wooden inlay emerges. 86fd2d97fd026e6afdca6a626d2ec98bWhen it comes to faux painted floors, no one it does it more daringly than our favorite, Miles Redd. Graphic and bold, this “marble” floor (above) is super dramatic yet it all seems to make sense when paired with lacquered walls and crisp white pre-war architectural details.b55f21f2cd3062b09d540a2d13fea359 Not all painted floors have to utilize pattern. In the interior, above, painting the walls such a strong shade of green may have been overkill, but a peek of it from the ground up makes quite an impact and contrasts nicely with the white walls and natural wood tones. bf3540a4e9194eb84c2891deef5adef0 There’s something so quaint about a traditional checker floor. Instead of opting to create such a pattern out of tile or stone, painting is a great alternative–and often more cost effective!
In this entry hallway, above, stain is applied to create this graphic pattern. In a high traffic, and potentially mess-prone area, this wood-stain “runner” eliminates the fear of tracking dirt all over an expensive carpet. Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 5.06.51 PM
One of our favorite decorative painters, Dean Barger, is a master of creating amazing painted floors. Above, Dean utilizes a traditional geometric pattern for a David Easton interior. Below, Dean channels his inner David Hicks to create this fun and high-contrast floor for a charity holiday house. Both are exceptionally lovely!Screen Shot 2014-06-09 at 5.10.22 PM
Next time you think your interior could use a bit of a facelift, don’t forget about your floors – a couple coats of paint and/or a fun pattern could be just what it needs! Have you ever painted the floors of your home? Feel free to share with us some of your ideas!
